In project 1, we gained a grasp of design concepts, techniques, and methodologies for producing ideas and transforming them into shapes. In project 2, we learnt about construction, materials, anthropometry, and ergonomics. In Project 3, we are to re-interpret the form and guiding principles from Project 1 and 2, our 1:1 framework and evolve it into a sequence of Sensorial Spaces with a total volumetric boundary of 20m3 - 30m3 anticipating the user's journey, experience, and emotion.
PROJECT 3 SHOWCASE
NARRATIVE
We were asked to write a narrative, a journey throughout the whole space of the structure. Although the meaning of ‘RHYTHM’ varies depending on the context, it is typically understood as the repetition of patterns or elements in an irregular or regular pattern. My group was appointed with the theme 'CELEBRATE'. This "RHYTHM" structure primarily celebrates movement, which can take a variety of forms. However, the primary action I choose was dancing since the rhythm of dancing frequently dictates the emotions; by the beat and frequency of the steps and hand movements, a movement may appear joyous, serene, sad, or angry. Stage 1 is a place for stretching, a pre-dancing activity that helps to relax our muscles. On the main stage, celebrate through dancing acts as a medium for free expression, allowing us to express our whole range of emotions. After dancing, a quiet space is made available for us to unwind and process our thoughts.
BUILDING MATERIAL
For my 1:10 model, I used grey board to represent concrete and white modelling board to represent steel. I used concrete especially for the 3rd space because I want it to give off a cold feeling, quiet, darker, nice place for people to rest. For the main space, I used steel for the wall because steel is often associated with bars, and it makes us think of the past regarding our childhood memories. During childhood, I am very active, always going to the playground and play the monkey bars. And every time when I succeed going through all the bars, I will celebrate it by dancing and hopping around. For the first space, I used concrete so that there is contrast between the platform railings and the wall. For the roof, both have a big contrast, the 3rd space is completely closed off with little light penetration, while the other one is open, with stacked roof. First space is for warm up: stretching. Hence, when the person first enters the space, it is very dark since the walls are all concrete and it is very solid, no light here. For the 3rd space, since when we are resting, we want to close our eyes, so I want a dark space with minimum light going through that's why all the roof and the walls are covered. There is an opening on this side of the wall, so it overlaps with each other, which allows fresh air to go through.
DESIGN PRINCIPLE
The asymmetry can be noticed in the overall structure, which looks like a yin-yang shape with the 1st space with a bigger circle than the 3rd space which is for resting.
The rhythm can be seen from the wall in the main space (center) with the wavy component. The support for both of the walls is arranged in regular intervals, to show the rhythmic element.
Repetition can be seen on both the roof and the wall. The roof in the first space (bigger circle) is made up of a circle with a hollow and it is subsequently repeated from largest to smallest. The horizontal wall in the main space is repeated to form grids with a combination of the support.
