TUTORIAL EXCERCISES
The week started with the 4 tutorial exercises that were given every week until week 4. The first tutorial exercise gives an introduction to geometrical expression. For this assignment, we were asked to do our own geometric drawing; an abstract to express ourselves, which requires us to include at least one of these ordering principles: axis, symmetry, hierarchy, datum, repetition and rhythm. According to my work, I choose symmetry as the main design principle, as we can see when viewing in portrait. However, from a landscape view, the drawing expresses that there are 2 sides of myself, the one that I show to other people and the other side is when I’m on my own. Other components have their meaning; such as the pentagon which represents hostility, glass cracks which represent fragility, fixed glass which means self-care, the wall which separates both sides firmly, etc.
The 2nd tutorial exercise was architectural renderings, students were asked to render in 4 different ways, which was hatching, cross-hatching, stippling and scumbling, by using a sphere as the main object for render, followed by its shadow.
The 3rd exercise focuses on architectural lettering, which was taught since architects use this type of lettering for blueprints, drawings and designs. Here the lecturer also explains the type of pencil that is best for lettering and the characteristics of architectural lettering. Our task was to write down the lyrics of Negaraku, the national anthem of Malaysia.
The last tutorial exercise is about scale and coloring media and introduces the use of a scale ruler, which will be used for future projects. A scale ruler is a tool for measuring lengths and transferring measurements at a fixed ratio of length. We were given a floor plan and were asked to redraw the floor plan with a different scale, which needs to be colored by using either color pencil, color marker or watercolor.
